I gave my life to the Lord when I was 43 years old. I was dyslexic, and I’d never read a book cover to cover. Somehow I managed to make it through high school, vocational school, and serve in the Navy with this struggle.
The Lord directed me to a church the day I gave my life to Him. Soon after my family and I started attending, there was a change in leadership. Within a year or two of the new pastor’s arrival, the pastor challenged the congregation to “read the Bible in a year”, as typically happens at the beginning of every new year. I went to him and said, “I can’t read the Bible because of my dyslexia.” He then used scripture to encourage me: Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” He told me to pray before I began reading my Bible, asking the Lord to renew my mind. I followed through and read the Bible that year. I was one of only 7 or 8 of us to do so, and the only guy.
I went on to attend classes held at church by the Christian Life School of Theology. I received my bachelor’s degree with a 3.7 GPA. I’d never gotten scores like that in school. The Lord had healed my mind, by the reading of His Word. I could read!
