I will just start this by saying I serve an incredible God! In Psalm 37:4 where the Bible says “Take delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart”… it isn’t lying. I started playing soccer when I was 5 years old, and basketball when I was 6. From that young age, God placed the passion in me for BOTH of those sports, and since then, He has far surpassed anything I could have dreamed in regards to both sports.
The summer before my 8th grade year, I went to my first youth camp with Christian Life. This camp was the first encounter I truly had with God being MY God. I experienced God in a way that changed my life. Up until that point in my life (I was 13), I played AAU basketball and club soccer. Both of these are an immense time commitment, and they kept my family and I away from church on Sundays because I would have tournaments all up and down the east coast. I had already signed up to play my next year of club soccer when I attended this youth camp. Upon returning home after camp, I felt that God was asking me to lay down travel soccer. Now as an aside, my ultimate dream as a soccer player at this point in my life was to play for the US National team and win a gold medal in the Olympics. Anyone in the world of soccer would tell you that the first step in that is to train with a competitive club team at a young age and develop your skills, and even then your chances are slim. But not with my God.
I can honestly say that trusting God and laying down club soccer was the single best decision I have made in my life thus far. God blessed me not only with the opportunity to play soccer AND basketball at the University of Richmond (while still being able to attend Christian Life might I add), but this just in; I was a member of the US Under 20 Women’s National team, and we won a gold medal this summer competing in the U-20 World Cup! I am a World Champion and a gold medalist, and I know whole-heartedly that God had this in mind for me when He asked me to lay down soccer, one of the things I love most on this earth. Now I have no idea if that is the extent of what God has for me in this area, but I have learned that God’s plans for me far exceed what I could ever come up with for myself, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4
