Giving Generously

Jen and I have facilitated Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University multiple times. A common phrase that Dave uses in his program and his radio show is, “Live like no one else now, so you can live like no one else later.” We had that opportunity this past week.

Dave’s personal finance class outlines seven steps to ongoing financial success and “Financial Peace.” He starts with getting a quick $1000 in the bank (step 1), and then rolling to paying off all your debts except the house (step 2), building up 3-6 months expenses in cash (step 3), and from there starting to invest for college, retirement, paying off the house early, and of course the most exciting step—giving like no one else.

Dave’s last “baby step,” (#7) teaches people to be generous, just like the Bible does in 2 Corinthians 9:11 “You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.”  Being debt free, we decided to step out of our current baby step (3b—saving for a hefty down payment on our first home) and try #7 for just a day and see how exciting giving really is.

One of Jen’s sister is about to start the next phase of life—college. We’ve been advising her with making the right choices in the coming days of choosing college’s and the pro’s/con’s of it all since we’ve been through that already successfully without debt. We at least wanted to help her sister out with transportation, as well as not having any car payments. I went around car shopping and found a little car perfect for a 17 year old, had some character but not a hunk of junk—it even had an iPhone/mp3 player hookup for the radio. The guy who owned it had the car given to his church thrift store, which he flipped to build a computer lab in Petersburg, so the funds were going to a good place too!

We paid cash for that car and gave it to Jen’s sister with no strings attached! Just a gift because we believe in the power of giving and being a blessing to others, as we have been blessed so much by our Heavenly Father. To say the least she was blown away.  It’s really cool being on this side of a God Story and making a difference in someone’s life through generosity.

“The world of the generous gets larger and larger, while the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller.” – Proverbs 11:24
