Getting Out Of Debt

Three years ago we were heavily in debt and had no game plan to get things right.

Tina and I took the Dave Ramsey course taught by Kevin Bacon and John Garthaffner. While we were taking the course, Tina got a surprise job offer and we praised God for how she was able to go back to work for the first time since she suffered a work injury in 2001 (that is its own God Story). We were determined to take the things we learned from the course, along with the extra income and get out of our financial hole quickly. Not long after we took the course we threw out the credit cards.

A year later, Tina’s knee pain got much worse and consequently she wound up losing her job and having three surgeries, including a total knee replacement in a little over a year. So we definitely trusted God and followed what we learned about budgeting and the ”4 Walls.”

With the ”4 Walls” taken care of, even though things have been tough financially, we have not worried about food, shelter, utilities, giving or medical bills. We were able to work out good long-term payment plans with most of our creditors, except two, which take almost constant communication and have paid down over $20,000 of debt over the past two years. Our credit score has not been good due to those 2 creditors, but we have been faithful and honest. We heard about the low mortgage interest rates and certainly never expected to be able to refinance any time soon due to the low credit score and we figured we would be able to refinance once we got out of the non-mortgage debt, which would probably be 2-3 years from now.

Then in early December, out of the blue, we received a letter from our mortgage company offering to refinance our mortgage at a much lower interest rate with no closing costs, a lower payment, and no change in the payoff date. We closed on the refinance this week! Praise God for His surprises! And Tina’s knee is better so she can drive and take stairs.
