God Breathes Life

During March of 2012, God answered my prayer by being selected to the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corps. This meant I would be able to continue my career in the Marine Corps but with that, it also meant I would be getting orders to move. About two months later I received orders to Richmond, VA. This meant I would have to tell my 15 & 16 year old boys that they would have to leave the only home they’ve ever known, and the church family they’ve been a part of for 15 years.

Two years prior, their Dad and I divorced due to alcoholism and domestic violence.  So there we were, me and my three kids (oh yes I have a 13 year old daughter as well)  packing up everything we owned and leaving the home we had known for 18  years. A day after arriving in Ft Lee, I was trying to locate a Red Box. I asked someone for help with this and a young man replied “I don’t know what that is. I just moved here from Okinawa a week ago”. From the back seat, I heard my son say “Hey, that’s Devin from California who moved to Okinawa, Japan 3 yrs ago”. So immediately we reconnected with Mike and Tammy, Devin’s parents.

Over the past year, I have gone to several churches in the Petersburg, Prince George and Colonial Heights area, but between working lots of weekends and not really finding a church with an established youth ministry, I hadn’t found a church home. In July, my younger son was mandated to have counseling. I also decided to attend counseling as well, as I was beginning to battle depression and was prescribed anti-depressants.  I was feeling like a failure as a mother and at my job, and loneliness was creeping in.

Tammy invited me to church and to the women’s study “Stronger”. Wow! What an amazing group of women. What an awesome service. I felt especially loved and could relate to the service. The Thank You Night was an opportunity to serve. Yea God! I got to know more people. Time for the presentation. Wow, what an amazing church! What amazing people. All of a sudden it felt like I could breath again, like life had been suffocating me and God was and is my oxygen.  Christian Life was and is a big part of renewing that relationship. Thank you to the Christian Life Family for making Christian Life a place where I could come and know Christ, celebrate and be celebrated, love and be loved, serve and be served through the love of Christ.
