17 months ago I adopted a 15 year old from a local foster home making me a first time mom to a teenager.
Jenny was diagnosed with RAD (Reactive Attachment Disorder); which is generally defined as “a failure to form normal attachments to primary caregivers due to neglect, abuse, abrupt separation from caregivers. However, with prayer, love, patience and concerted effort, RAD can be repaired.
Parenting a child with RAD can be exhausting, frustrating, and emotionally trying. After the adoption was final, she had so many layers of anger and rage that negative behavior was exhibited constantly. She did everything she could to push me away, even running away from home. Sometimes I even wondered if it was worth it. However, I truly felt that the Lord was calling be a mom to Jenny. We were on our way home after church one Sunday during the Live Love sermon series and Jenny said “mom can I tell you something; I liked Pastor Dennis’ message on love and it has made me think. I want to write my own testimony to tell my past history and tell everyone that for the first time I finally realize that I have someone who loves me and won’t give up on me no matter how bad I act. You and God.” I know that this is truly the power of God acting in her life through the Holy Spirit. God has overwhelmed me with His faithfulness through this whole process and I look forward to seeing what He has in store for us next.
