I am in the middle of a Sermon series on Sunday mornings called "Know Fear". I often think about the impact of fear in our lives. We sometimes fear what we shouldn't, which causes false barriers and limitations in our lives, or we don't fear Whom we should, which causes loose living and the consequence of sin. It was once said of a famous minister who was jailed for breaking the law that he never lost his love for God, but he did lose his fear of God.

The Bible says it this way:

Matthew 10:27-31 Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

I realize that in my own life the fear of God has been a healthy barrier. I do not fear God in the sense that He is out to get me, or a tyrant who is looking to punish my every failure, but I do fear him in a way that produces respect and honor in my heart for who He is. It is this honor that motivates me to please Him, and to realize just how powerful He is in my life. On judgment day the Bible teaches that every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord. On that day there will be no excuses for our willing sinfulness, no exceptions for our intentional failures, and no story to explain why we may have walked in disobedience. The blood of Jesus will certainly cover all our sins in the judgment, this is most assuredly true, however there is a second judgment, a judgment of works. May the fear of God in this life causes us to walk in such devotion and faithfulness that none of us are ashamed on that day.
